Google Earth is much faster, so the Earth maps are not broken up into separate detailed maps.
Also, Google Earth gives you better tools for measuring the length of a planned hike.
First obtain the software (downloadable for free
from www.googleearth.com).
Right click on My Places,
pull down add, then network link, and paste the following into the "link" space:
http://www.minitreks.info/maps/carlisle_trails_gearth.kmz
They both use the same file type.
The Carlisle Maps and Earth examples are two separate copies of the
same data. One looks better in Maps and the other looks better in Earth, but you can
view either in either.
Here is an example of the Carlisle Earth-optimized file in Maps. To see the Maps-optimized file
in Earth,
Right click on My Places,
pull down add, then network link, and paste the following into the "link" space:
http://www.minitreks.info/maps/carlisle_trails_gmaps.kmz
